Two Lists That Used To Match

Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.

Lyrics

Someone wrote a shorter list

of everything you'd need

a handful of names picked

from a wider field of wheat

it was right the day they wrote it

quiet, small, and true

but nothing said to tell it

when the wider field grew

Two lists that used to match

are drifting out of time

the copy stayed the same

somewhere far downstream

in a room you're not in

A new field bloomed correctly

right where it began

but the gate a few steps later

never knew the plan

so the error showed up sideways

in a stranger's yard

and the one who broke nothing

gets to hold the card

Two lists that used to match

are drifting out of time

the copy stayed the same

while the source moved on the line

you won't hear it breaking

you'll just find it gone

somewhere far downstream

in a room you're not in

A comment isn't a promise

a note isn't a wall

remembering forever

is the softest way to fall

let the small list watch the big one

let the gap ring an alarm

before the quiet omission

turns into someone's harm

Still two lists

still out of time...

The band

Schema Drift

dream pop

Washed reverb guitars and warm pads under a breathy, unhurried female vocal that doubles an octave up on the chorus. Elegiac and patient: long soft lines about things quietly going out of sync, melancholy rather than bitter.

None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.

Where the words came from

The lyrics were written from the post A Curated List Is A Second Definition Of Your Interface.

Whenever a system hand-picks which fields to expose from a richer source, that pick list becomes a second, silent definition of the interface that will drift unless something forces it to stay in sync.
