The Return Visit

Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.

Lyrics

The pump kept tripping every night at two

I had a theory, thought I had a clue

I swapped the belt out, called the job complete

Went home and slept on a story, not the street

Three nights later same damn bell rings loud

I'd fixed the story, not the thing that's proud

So I go back slow, I write down what I'll see

One small change, then I wait and let it be

Don't call it done till you've gone back and looked

Don't trust the quiet like it's gospel in a book

A guess that's never tested is a guess and nothing more

Go on back and check the evidence once more

This time I named the cause before I touched a wire

Said if I'm right, this light goes out and doesn't come back higher

I made the smallest cut a man could make

Then I set a date to see what's true, what's fake

Don't call it done till you've gone back and looked

Don't trust the quiet like it's gospel in a book

A guess that's never tested is a guess and nothing more

Go on back and check the evidence once more

Could be minutes, could be a Sunday drive away

But somebody's gotta own the day

Or we should keep an eye on it turns into a lie

Nobody watching till the whole thing dies

So I went back down that road again

Found the silence held, found the truth of when

Either it holds, or it's open once more

That's the only kind of knowing I'm sure of

The band

The On-Call

alt-country

A weathered tenor, close-mic'd with a little rasp, telling it plainly. A specific person, a specific night and a lesson learned the expensive way - warm, and never preachy about it.

None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.

Where the words came from

The lyrics were written from the post A Diagnosis Needs A Return Visit.

Operational diagnoses become trustworthy when they predict an observable change and return to the evidence after intervention.
