Quiet Line Don't Mean Clear
Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.
Lyrics
I got a graph on the wall says everything's fine
Green light burning down that quiet, quiet line
But a quiet line don't mean the water's clear
Sometimes it just means nobody's watching here
The meter's been paid off, told to look away
Right when the flood is coming, it's the first to walk away
When the whole house shakes that's when they cut the wire
Same old story, load too heavy near the fire
The watchman drops his lantern right before the door caves in
Calls it savings, calls it sampling, calls it dealing with the din
But the debt don't care what story that you tell
Comes collecting at the moment your light goes as well
Oh, quiet line don't mean clear
Silence ain't the same as safe, my dear
Watch the watchman, question what he swore
Collector's at his own damn door
Separate your gold from the gravel and the noise
Guard the sound of trouble like your favorite toys
When the meter itself starts to lie and hide
That silence is the loudest thing you'll find inside
Oh, quiet line don't mean clear
Silence ain't the same as safe, my dear
Watch the watchman, question what he swore
Collector's at his own damn door
Ask what you're missing 'fore you trust that glow
Quiet line, quiet line, baby I don't know
The band
The Technical Debt Collectors
A gravelly, swaggering voice calling out over a band that struts. Twelve-bar phrasing with a repeated opening line, and a lyric that is all debt, interest, collection and somebody eventually paying.
None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.
Where the words came from
The lyrics were written from the post When Your Dashboards Lie: The Hidden Cost of Missing Telemetry.
Observability is only valuable when you understand what your monitoring cannot see.
