GP Software Widget for a National Health Screening Registry
This project delivered a widget embedded directly into a widely used piece of GP clinical software, connected to a national health screening registry. Rather than sending practitioners to a separate portal, the widget let them request a screening kit for a patient and receive results and key-date reminders from within the clinical software they already used every day.
What made it hard
Three constraints compounded each other: building within the extensibility model of a third-party clinical product rather than a blank canvas, handling sensitive patient screening data to the standard healthcare data requires, and keeping kit requests, results, and reminders reliably in sync with the national registry in something close to real time. Getting any one of these wrong risked either breaking the clinical workflow GPs relied on or handling patient health information incorrectly.
Outcome
The result was a lightweight, embedded widget that let GPs manage cancer screening kit requests, results, and reminders without leaving their clinical software, backed by a compliant, reliable connection to the national registry.
