It Can't Say No

Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.

Lyrics

I wrote it down.

I read it back.

I called that checking.

It agreed with me.

It always will.

The same sentence, twice,

in my own hand.

It can't say no.

It can't say no.

A green light on the landing

and no one on the stairs.

The rule was living in two places.

Different hands. Different years.

They agreed about the middle

and parted at the edge.

Nobody meant that.

Someone was tired.

Someone retyped it

rather than go and look.

It can't say no.

It can't say no.

A green light on the landing

and no one on the stairs.

So I carried the rule into one room

and pointed both doors at it.

One place it lives.

One thing to ask.

If nothing I could break

would turn it red,

it was never a net.

It was a picture of a net.

Ask it something you don't already know.

Ask it something you don't already know.

Ask it something you don't already know.

Ask it something you don't already know.

Ask it something you don't already know.

The band

Soft Delete

lo-fi ambient folk

Tape hiss, a felt piano, a nylon-string guitar and one hushed voice close enough to hear it breathe. Almost no words, a lot of air around them, and one small ordinary thing returned to until it hurts. Never states the point and never resolves it.

None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.

Where the words came from

The lyrics were written from the post A Test That Agrees With Itself Isn't A Test.

A test that recomputes the same logic it is meant to verify will pass forever, even after the rule it is protecting has silently drifted into two different answers.
