The Vault Doesn't Ask

Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.

Lyrics

A name still sits

in yesterday's list

I wrote it down

I didn't mean to keep it

Inbox humming

like a second clock

every hour

something else to watch

Someone quiet

reading through the noise

saying only

this one, not that one

this one, not that one

The door stays open

files just breathe on the shelf

plain and small

they'll outlast me myself

A reply comes in

and something goes quiet

no one claps

it just isn't there

Someone quiet

reading through the noise

saying only

this one, not that one

this one, not that one

(instrumental — breath and pad only)

Let yesterday

stay in yesterday

I don't need

to carry all of it

this one

not that one

the light's still on

I didn't turn it off

The band

Soft Delete

lo-fi ambient folk

Tape hiss, a felt piano, a nylon-string guitar and one hushed voice close enough to hear it breathe. Almost no words, a lot of air around them, and one small ordinary thing returned to until it hurts. Never states the point and never resolves it.

None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.

Where the words came from

The lyrics were written from the post Managing My Attention.

Most productivity systems fail for the same reason - they rely on the person using them to remember to maintain them.
