Stale by Fridaynew
Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.
Lyrics
He picked it up on Monday morning, coffee still too hot to drink
Read the page like scripture, wrote it down in ink
Five days of quiet building, head down, hands moving slow
Never thought to ask if the ground was still the ground below
It wasn't the change that cost us, it was the not knowing when
A thing moved out from under him and nobody said again
Five days went by in silence, the work was clean and true
Just built against a ghost of what it used to be to you
Tuesday it shifted sideways, some hand redrew the line
Nobody rang to tell him, there wasn't any sign
By Friday it came back to him, stamped and handed down
Same two hands, same good work, wearing yesterday's crown
It wasn't the change that cost us, it was the not knowing when
A thing moved out from under him and nobody said again
Five days went by in silence, the work was clean and true
Just built against a ghost of what it used to be to you
Don't tell me lock the gate up tighter, don't tell me check it twice at dawn
The drift don't happen at the doorway, it happens once you're gone
Somebody's got to watch it, somebody's got to call
The minute that it moves on him, before he loses it all
A two-line note on Tuesday beats a bounce on Friday night
Just somebody watching, saying this ain't what it was, it's changed, hold tight
The band
The On-Call
A weathered tenor, close-mic'd with a little rasp, telling it plainly. A specific person, a specific night and a lesson learned the expensive way - warm, and never preachy about it.
None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.
Where the words came from
The lyrics were written from the post A Ticket Can Go Stale While You're Still Building It.
The expensive part of a mid-build requirement change is rarely the change itself, it's the delay before the person building against the old version finds out.
