The Seams Lay Flat
Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.
Lyrics
You took the old stair down one quiet afternoon
Carried every step out to the lane
In a far room I hung lanterns on its rail
Working from a drawing of the house before the change
The seams lay flat, our stitches never crossed
But lying flat is not the same as holding on
So build the whole of it and walk it end to end
Before you call it safe, before you call it done
Our letters crossed like strangers in the evening post
Each of us was careful, each of us was kind
The doors all closed so softly not a hinge complained
Till someone reached the landing and the stair was gone
The seams lay flat, our stitches never crossed
But lying flat is not the same as holding on
So build the whole of it and walk it end to end
Before you call it safe, before you call it done
The little light stayed green, but green for yesterday
A photograph of rooms that someone since has moved
When you take a thing away, say it soft to me
If the hall is blocked, put back the stair, then mend it slow
Two halves can fit like hands
And never make a whole
Light every room and see
The band
Schema Drift
Washed reverb guitars and warm pads under a breathy, unhurried female vocal that doubles an octave up on the chorus. Elegiac and patient: long soft lines about things quietly going out of sync, melancholy rather than bitter.
None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.
Where the words came from
The lyrics were written from the post Merging Cleanly Is Not The Same As Building.
A clean merge only proves two branches did not edit the same lines, so the combined result has to be built and tested before anyone calls it safe.
