Clear to the Bottom
Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.
Lyrics
You see the water, not the pump below
The filters turning where the current flows
Easy looks easy 'cause somebody stayed
Down in the engine room, tending what they made
Every calm surface is a promise kept
By hands that noticed while the rest of us slept
The chlorine steady and the drain unblocked
Trust isn't magic, it's a routine clock
Build it clear to the bottom
Let me see where I stand
Show me the depth and the current
Put the gauge in my hand
We don't need every valve and wire
Just the light to see it's fine
Build it clear to the bottom
Every single time
We don't need every valve and wire
Just the light to see it's fine
Build it clear to the bottom
Every single time
The sensor reads the water, not the dream
A robot cleans but cannot judge the scene
Someone still decides what safe should mean
Hands on the wheel behind the running machine
Clear to the bottom, shining and true
We'll keep the water moving just for you
Clear to the bottom, come on in
This is how the trust begins
The band
Hot Path
A soaring tenor over harmonised twin lead guitars, and a proper melodic guitar break in the middle of every song - the warm, sustained, seventies arena tone that sings rather than bites. Wide open images and long held notes, certain that the hard problem is worth the work.
None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.
Where the words came from
The lyrics were written from the post What Swimming Pools Teach Us About Better Technology.
Swimming pools are a surprisingly useful way to think about reliable, humane technology.
