The Same Name for Two Thingsnew

Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.

Lyrics

We found it in the room where no one clapped for us,

A switch behind a word we thought we understood,

Someone said cancel, meant it small, meant it for now,

But the wire ran further than we ever could see, God

You don't reuse a mercy for the easy jobs,

You don't let almost-gone stand in for gone for good,

So walk us through it slow, past every screen that lies,

Show us the door before we shut it on someone

Jesus, name the door before we close it,

Not every ending has to be the end,

Walk the whole hall with us, Lord, and show us,

Where cancel stops and never starts again

We build our fastest fix from what was lying there,

A flag that already worked, we just pointed it,

But you don't build that way, you name each thing you touch,

One word, one door, one truth for every hand

Jesus, name the door before we close it,

Not every ending has to be the end,

Walk the whole hall with us, Lord, and show us,

Where cancel stops and never starts again

Someone sat and watched it, step by step, by step,

Not just the code, the person moving through,

That's how you find us too, Lord, close, unhurried, kind,

Following the whole of us, not just the line

Where cancel stops and never starts again,

We thank you, Jesus, for the door held open,

Where cancel stops and never starts again

The band

Software in the Pews

modern worship

An unhurried male tenor answered by a whole room singing the hook back. Earnest, communal and plain-spoken - more 'we' than 'I' - building on one simple image and returning to it, hopeful about getting things right together.

None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.

Where the words came from

The lyrics were written from the post The Word "Cancel" Was Doing Too Much Work.

A hospital system cutover test caught a cancellation feature quietly wired to a permanent-exclusion flag, which is a reminder that small-sounding actions deserve to be traced all the way to what they actually touch.
