Every Hand That Held It

Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.

Lyrics

She held the paper, asked me plain

Is this the same one, come back around again

The numbers matched but the story's gone

One name left standing where a hundred hands had worn

Jesus, You remember every hand that held it

Every small repair, You never once forgot it

We forget the road but You kept the whole way

Write it down, write it down, don't let it fade

We only kept the newest name

And buried all the rest like they never came

But You don't erase what the last one couldn't see

Every quiet change was still a change to me

Jesus, You remember every hand that held it

Every small repair, You never once forgot it

We forget the road but You kept the whole way

Write it down, write it down, don't let it fade

Not just where we landed, but the way we came

Not just who is standing, every quiet name

Lord, teach us to keep it, before we have to ask

Build the trail today so the truth outlasts

Every hand that held it, You still know

Write it down, write it down, let the whole thing show

The band

Software in the Pews

modern worship

An unhurried male tenor answered by a whole room singing the hook back. Earnest, communal and plain-spoken - more 'we' than 'I' - building on one simple image and returning to it, hopeful about getting things right together.

None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.

Where the words came from

The lyrics were written from the post When A System Only Remembers The Last Change.

A system that only shows who last touched a record, not the full history of changes, quietly pushes the cost of that missing history onto whoever has to resolve the next dispute.
