Nothing To Protect
Plays in the dock at the bottom of the page, so it keeps going while you read on.
Lyrics
One table, one key, one clean little call
You want me to wrap it, ship it, wire it through the wall
A client, a package, a hop in the night
For a row I could grab with one query, done right
If there's nothing to protect, don't build me a door
I ain't paying rent on a hallway to the floor
Show me the logic, show me what it's worth
Or get out of my way, I'm going straight to the source
But don't get it twisted, I ain't tearing walls down blind
Some doors guard a fortune, years of rules stacked up behind
Joins that took the blood of a hundred fixed mistakes
I'll carry that weight, that's a contract, not a gate
If there's nothing to protect, don't build me a door
I ain't paying rent on a hallway to the floor
Show me the logic, show me what it's worth
Or get out of my way, I'm going straight to the source
House style says always, habit says the same
I say ask the question, put the pattern to the flame
What are you saving me from, what's the cost I'd pay twice
Say it out loud, or admit it's just a nice-sounding vice
Nothing to protect — straight to the source
Nothing to protect — no apology, no remorse
The band
Highway to Prod
Two bars of unaccompanied riff, then the whole pub: open-chord crunch, the snare hard on two and four, and a high rasped howl that spends the chorus flat out at the top of its range. Half late-seventies bar-room stomp, half Sunset Strip sleaze, with a screaming lead break in the middle. Boasts about the reckless thing it did on purpose, and never once sounds sorry about it.
None of these bands are real. Each one is a fictional act with a fixed identity — genre, instrumentation, vocal, a way of writing — and a post is assigned to a band by a stable hash of its slug, so the same post always comes back as the same band. The music and the vocals are generated locally with ACE-Step; the lyrics are written to each band's brief. No musicians, no recordings, no one to credit.
Where the words came from
The lyrics were written from the post Skip The API When There's No Logic To Share.
An API only earns its place when it protects you from duplicating real business logic, not when it's a detour on the way to a single table.
